Shettima explains why Tinubu kept fuel subsidy removal plan secret before swearing-in

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has explained why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not publicly disclose his decision on fuel subsidy removal before his inauguration.

Shettima made the disclosure on Friday in Lagos during a Sallah homage visit by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) to President Tinubu.

Shettima said the president deliberately kept the decision private because he believed that revealing it earlier would have attracted pressure that could have influenced him to abandon it.

Speaking during the visit, he stated: “You kept it a top secret; it wasn’t part of your speech. You made that decision and kept it close to your heart because you believed that if you had included it in your speech, some people would have tried to persuade you not to do so.

“That is the courage of leadership, the audacity of hope, and the boldness to see into the future.”
