The Sokoto State Government has denied rumours that Governor Ahmed Aliyu visited Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, at the Sokoto Custodial Centre with his Abia State counterpart, Alex Otti.
The government refuted the assertion in a statement released on Friday by Abubakar Bawa, the governor’s spokesperson.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Ahmed Aliyu was in the Holy Land performing Lesser Hajj as of 30th November 2025, at the time Dr. Otti privately visited Sokoto State,” the statement read.

The statement claims that Otti was greeted by a group of commissioners and Special Advisers at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport. They then escorted him to the Sokoto Government House, where he was treated with the customary courtesies offered to visiting state governors.
The statement further reiterated Aliyu’s commitment to the Nigerian project and his stance as a peace-loving, law-abiding citizen.

“The Sokoto State Government reiterates that Governor Ahmed Aliyu holds deep respect for constituted authority, remains committed to the Nigerian project, and continues to be a peace loving and law-abiding citizen,” it added.
The explanation comes after Otti’s visit to Nnamdi Kanu, which the IPOB called “historic” and “surprising,” attracted public attention.

Remember that the governor of Abia State was accompanied by Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother; Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), the state attorney general and commissioner for justice; and Ferdinand Ekeoma, his special adviser on media and publicity.
On November 20, 2025, Nnamdi Kanu was found guilty on several counts of terrorism and then sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court of Nigeria.
