Akenleye Femi, a lance corporal soldier in the 221 Battalion at the Wawa cantonment in Niger state, is accused by the Nigerian Army of killing his wife before ending his own life.
The army said in a statement on Monday that the occupants of the barracks are extremely startled by the October 11 tragedy.
The Nigerian soldier, Femi and his wife were discovered dead in their flat, according to Stephen Nwankwo, the army’s acting assistant spokesperson.
According to a preliminary investigation, the soldier was on duty but had asked his commander for permission to take care of personal problems.
“Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were suddenly found dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment,” the statement reads.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier was on duty within the cantonment, and had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal needs and return to duty. This followed the discovery of the dead bodies lying in their apartment.”
This sad development comes only a few days after another soldier, Haruna was reportedly set ablaze by his wife in Akwa Ibom

Nwankwo stated that while a comprehensive inquiry is being conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the deceased’s remains have been preserved.
