AFCON Qualifier: Nigeria’s Super Eagles Crush Benin 3- 0, Osimhen Scores.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a convincing 3-0 victory against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The match held extra significance as Benin had previously defeated Nigeria earlier this year during World Cup qualifying, under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria’s caretaker manager, Austin Eguavoen, opted for a striking trio of Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, and Samuel Chukwueze, initially leaving star forward Victor Osimhen on the bench. The experienced captain Williams Troost-Ekong led a solid defense alongside Ola Aina, Kevin Akpoguma, and Semi Ajayi.
Ademola Lookman opened the scoring just before halftime with a brilliant solo effort, dribbling past three defenders and slotting the ball into the net. The introduction of Osimhen in the second half was met with a thunderous ovation from the Uyo crowd, and he quickly justified the excitement by doubling Nigeria’s lead with a superb finish. Lookman then sealed the victory with his second goal of the match, ensuring Nigeria’s dominant position in their qualifying group.
