British number one Katie Boulter secured a place in her first WTA 500 semifinal with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-3) over Croatian opponent Donna Vekic at the San Diego Open. This impressive win comes on the heels of her previous triumph against second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the round of 16.
Boulter Overcomes Early Setback, Takes Control
Despite trailing 3-1 in the first set, Boulter displayed remarkable resilience, winning nine out of the following ten games. This decisive surge showcased her confidence and skill.
Vekic’s Early Lead Short-Lived
Although Vekic, seeded seventh, initially claimed the first break in the opening set, Boulter capitalized on her opponent’s errors, breaking back immediately. Boulter then saved three break points before securing a crucial second break, ultimately winning the first set.
Dominant Second Set Seals the Deal
Boulter continued her strong performance in the second set, breaking Vekic’s serve twice. While Vekic managed to claw back one break, Boulter remained composed and converted her first match point with a powerful forehand. This decisive shot concluded the match in an hour and 36 minutes.
Boulter Looks Forward to Semifinal Challenge
“It was a tough battle under challenging conditions,” Boulter stated in her post-match interview. “Both of us are aggressive players, making it difficult to find a rhythm. I’m happy to have gotten through the first set and played well in the second.”
Boulter now faces American player Emma Navarro in the semifinals. Navarro secured her spot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Daria Saville of Australia.
