Falconets Edge Korea 1-0 with Sabastine’s Winning Goal.
In a tightly contested match at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, Nigeria’s Falconets secured a 1-0 victory over Korea Republic in their opening game of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. The game, characterized by limited scoring opportunities, saw Nigeria gradually gain the upper hand, particularly in the second half.
Nigeria’s decisive moment came late in the match when substitute Flourish Sabastine scored the only goal of the game. Sabastine cut in from the right, striking the ball against the upright before it rolled into the net, giving Nigeria the vital win.
Earlier in the match, forward Mary Lucky Mkpa had several chances but failed to convert, and goalkeeper Shukurat Bakare was forced into action to deny Korea on multiple occasions. Korea nearly took the lead in the first half when a 22-yard free kick from Myeyung rattled the crossbar.
As the Falconets prepare for their next match against three-time champions Germany, the team will need to build on this hard-fought win. Germany, who defeated Venezuela in their opener, will pose a significant challenge.
