In a shocking defeat to end their AFCON qualifiers, the Super Eagles lost their final Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifiers with a devastating 2-1 defeat to Rwanda.
The match, which took place at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, had a goalless first half but saw two Rwanda players pick up two yellow cards.
The second half proceeded with much momentum as substitute Samuel Chukwueze dribbled past three players before executing a deft finish to Nigeria 1-0 in the 59th minute.
Shortly after, the Rwanda team made three substitutes to change the course of the game. Ange Mutsinzi equalized for Rwanda to make it 1-1 in the 72nd minute. Three minutes later, Ismaël Nshutiyamagara pushed the Rwandans ahead to make 1-2.
Staring defeat in the face, the Super Eagles brought on Victor Osimhen and Umar Sadiq in the 77th and 89th minute respectively, to turn things around, but the Rwandans held on till the final whistle was blown.
Even though they lost to Rwanda, Nigeria remained at the top of the group with 11 points. While Benin and Rwanda came in second and third with 8 points each.
Some are suggesting this loss is a payback to Libya, who remained at the bottom of the table with 5 points and no hope of qualifying.
