Nigeria Moves Up the FIFA Rankings Despite a Not Too Impressive Show in the 2026 WCQ
In the latest football rankings released by FIFA, the world’s football governing body, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have moved up in the FIFA rankings despite not having impressed Nigerians in the last qualifiers.
The Super Eagles moved from 44th place to 43rd place in the latest FIFA rankings released on April 3, 2025. In the Africa rankings, they remain in the sixth position after four games across teams A and B of the national team. Morocco remains first in Africa and 12th in the world. Other countries like Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and the Ivory Coast are second to fifth in Africa.
Nigeria beat the Amavubi of Rwanda by two goals to nil in Kigali before going on to draw 1-1 with the Warriors of Zimbabwe at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria.

The CHAN Eagles also picked up the same 4 points as they drew goalless with Ghana in Accra, while they hit them with a 3-1 victory in the return leg.
Eric Chelle is on a decent run in his first two games, having grabbed 4 points out of a total 6 points to be won.
They remain in fourth position in Group C, six points behind the group leaders, South Africa, whom they play in the next round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, scheduled to be held in September.
Before then, they will be participating in Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament consisting of Nigeria, Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Jamaica.
