Nigerian Sprint Star Onojuvwevwo Blazes to Paris Olympics!

Nigerian track and field is buzzing with excitement after teenage phenom Ella Onojuvwevwo secured her spot at the Paris Olympics!

Record-Breaking Run:

Competing at the South Eastern Conference (SEC) Championships, the 19-year-old LSU sophomore scorched the track with a blistering 400m personal best of 50.57 seconds. This phenomenal time not only clinched her a spot in the final but also etched her name in history:

  • Fastest Nigerian in Over Two Decades: Onojuvwevwo’s run is the fastest by a Nigerian woman in the 400m since legendary athlete Falilat Ogunkoya clocked 50.50s in 2001!
  • Record Shatterer: She surpassed the Olympic qualifying standard, obliterated LSU’s 27-year-old school record, set a new Nigerian Under-20 record, and became the 5th fastest Nigerian woman ever in this event, as well as the 17th fastest in African history!

Building on Success:

This achievement comes on the heels of Onojuvwevwo’s role in the Nigerian mixed 4x400m relay team that previously qualified for the Olympics at the World Relays. She’s also only the second Nigerian woman to break the 51.00s barrier since Patience George in 2015 (50.75s).

Eyes on the Future:

Onojuvwevwo will compete in the final of the SEC Championships, looking to potentially lower her record-breaking time and even break the elusive sub-50 second mark.

The future of Nigerian sprinting looks incredibly bright with this young star leading the charge!
