Nigerian Sprinters On Fire: Onwuzurike Books Olympic Spot, Ashe Matches PB

Nigerian athletics received a double dose of good news as Udodi Onwuzurike and Favour Ashe delivered impressive performances on the track.

Onwuzurike Qualifies for Paris Olympics

In his professional debut, Onwuzurike secured his ticket to the Paris Olympics. Competing at the Pure Athletics Invitational, he clocked a blistering 20.13s in the 200m, surpassing the Olympic qualifying standard of 20.16s. This exciting win adds Onwuzurike to the growing list of Nigerian athletes qualified for Paris, joining names like Tobi Amusan and Favour Ofili.

Ashe Equals Personal Best, Leads Auburn Domination

Meanwhile, Favour Ashe solidified his claim as a force to be reckoned with. At the Tiger Track Classic, he blazed to a 9.96s finish in the 100m, matching his personal best from 2023. While this time would have been the world lead, 17-year-old American Christian Miller’s astonishing 9.93s took the top spot. Ashe’s impressive run further propelled his team, the University of Auburn, to a dominating 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100m. Compatriot Kanyinsola Ajayi also achieved a personal best of 10.14s, while Azeem Fahmi and Dario Matau rounded out the top positions.

Strong Showing Bodes Well for World Relays

These stellar performances by Onwuzurike and Ashe highlight the depth and talent within Nigeria’s male sprinting pool. With proper coaching from the federation, they have the potential to be a dominant force in the upcoming World Relays 4x100m event in the Bahamas.
