Following the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with the Warriors of Zimbabwe, their chances of clinching the 2026 World Cup ticket are slim.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are currently in fourth place with 7 points and 4 games remaining in the World Cup Qualifiers. They are six points behind leaders South Africa and one point behind second-placed Rwanda and third-placed Benin.

To many Nigerians, all hope is lost for the Super Eagles to pick their spot in the World Cup tournament, since the available slots open to CAF are just nine.

The world footballing body, FIFA, declared that the UEFA has sixteen slots, CAF has nine slots, AFC has eight slots, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL have six slots, and OFC has one. This makes it 46 out of 48 slots.

With this, a playoff tournament will be organized to decide who gets the final two slots.

However, even if Nigeria manages to win all their remaining 4 matches, they might be placed second in the group but still might not be among the best second-placed teams on the table to head into the playoffs.

On the playoffs table, Gabon currently leads with 15 points, while Cameroon, Senegal, Namibia, Comoros, and Mozambique have 12 points each, with Burkina Faso having 11.

As it stands, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are in a losing fight against South Africa and eight other countries, with the hope that they drop points in the coming games while Nigeria picks up a maximum of 12 points.

Eric Chelle, who was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation, may have seen his promises of helping the Super Eagles clinch the World Cup ticket fail at just two games into his history as the coach.
