World number one Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning defeat in the third round of the Indian Wells tournament. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was ousted by 20-year-old Italian Luca Nardi, a lucky loser ranked a staggering 123rd in the world.
Nardi, who initially lost in qualifying, entered the main draw due to another player’s withdrawal. He played with surprising confidence, firing 34 winners to defeat Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The young Italian’s victory was sealed with a final ace, leaving him overwhelmed with emotion.
Djokovic, still seeking his first title of 2024, expressed frustration during the match with an umpire’s call. He argued for a hindrance penalty when Nardi paused mid-point, believing the ball would go out. However, the umpire ruled that Nardi’s action wasn’t a hindrance, as he didn’t verbally indicate the point was over.
This loss marks a historic moment, with Nardi becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to defeat Djokovic at a major tournament. Djokovic acknowledged his struggles this season: “No titles this year. That’s not something I’m used to.”
Despite the setback, Djokovic remains focused. “It’s part of the sport,” he stated. “Hopefully I’ll win some more and still keep going.” He aims to break his recent slump and return to peak form.
