Tinubu Confirms Prof. Amupitan as INEC Chairman Amid Transition

Technology can’t end electoral flaws – Former INEC Chair, Yakubu

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, claims that technological advancements are insufficient to address the issues that persistently compromise the legitimacy of Nigerian elections.

In a recently published book titled “Election Management in Nigeria: 2015–2025,” Professor Yakubu made this claim.

According to the reports, the 200-page book provides a thorough overview of INEC’s activities, successes, and failures throughout Yakubu’s two terms in office, which started in 2015.

The former INEC chairman reminisced on a decade he described as one of the most important in Nigerian election administration history while characterising the book as the first and most thorough account of the achievements, lessons learnt, and difficulties of his two-term tenure.

Additionally, he recognised the limitations of technology, pointing out that although it had improved the process, it was not a cure-all.

He claims that INEC implemented a number of measures in response to the difficulties, such as increased voter education, training for election officials, and closer cooperation with security agencies to guarantee the security of voters and staff.

The former INEC chairman pointed out that regulations were also created to direct the use of electoral technologies.

Yakubu emphasised the necessity of ongoing change and watchfulness in the future.
