ChatGPT and Sora shut down for the second time this december
ChatGPT, Sora, and OpenAI’s developer-facing API have gone down for more than four hours on Thursday, as reported. According to OpenAI, the major outage started at around 11 a.m. PT, but the service is now resuming gradually at the present time, 3:16 p.m. PT. Remember, avid users of ChatGPT might recall that this happened early this month as well.
Thursday afternoon, TechCrunch got error messages when it tried to access ChatGPT and Sora.
OpenAI has said on its status page that the cause of the outage was one of their upstream providers, but it offers no more information on this. As of 2:05 p.m. PT, OpenAI said ChatGPT was back online, though users might have trouble loading their chat history. Sora came back online at 3:16 p.m. PT. The company says it is working on a complete fix for ChatGPT and its API.
This is the second time this month that all OpenAI services have gone down. When this happened two weeks ago, it identified the problem as the result of a telemetry service that had gone haywire. This disruption lasted about 6 hours, which is quite an unusually extended time. Most of the time, such outages take only an hour or two.
Services popularizing OpenAI’s API, such as Perplexity and Siri’s Apple Intelligence integration, had not shown any signs of outage, according to the companies’ respective status pages and TechCrunch testing.
