OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on his personal blog that the organization believes it “knows how to build” what has otherwise been historically regarded as “artificial general intelligence” and is starting to shift its goal to “superintelligence” He continues to declare that in the post, saying: “We love our products now, but we are here for the glorious future.” The use of superintelligent tools may well speed up scientific discovery and innovation well beyond what we can do and, therefore, increase massively the growing prosperity and abundance.

A few times further, Altman said that there could possibly be “a few thousand days” to superintelligence, and its advent would “be more intense than people think.”

AGI, that is the acronyms for artificial general intelligence; the definition is quite vague to be sure, but it is distinctly owned by OpenAI: “very much autonomous systems outperforming humans on a majority of economically valuable works.”

The definition of AGI by OpenAI and close collaborator-investor Microsoft includes AI systems producing at least $100 billion in profits. And whenever OpenAI achieves that, Microsoft will have nothing to do with that technology, according to their agreement.

So what definition might Altman be referring to? He did not specify, but most possibly, it is that the former. Altman wrote that he thinks AI agents – AI systems which could perform certain tasks autonomously – might, as it were, ‘join the workplace’ and ‘materially change the outputs of companies within this year.’

“Putting excellent tools over time in the hands of people will give them results across a certain extent,” he said.

That is possible, but by the same token, a current A1 technology is strictly limited. For example, it hallucinates, and most mistakes are clear in the eyes of any human; and it may become very expensive.

But all these problems seem to have been easily conquerable in the last short period. Still, learn we have from the last few years: timelines for technological development shift.

We’re pretty confident, “in the next few years everyone will see what we see, and that the need to take great care while maximizing broad benefit and empowerment is so important,” Altman wrote. “Given the possibilities of our work, OpenAI cannot be a normal company. How lucky and humbling it is to be able to play a role in this work.”

One would hope that as OpenAI signaled its turn toward what it considers to be superintelligence, the company would divert more than sufficient resources toward that end to guarantee that superintelligent systems would behave themselves properly.
