Master Guide: Delete Facebook, Instagram, and Threads Fast
As Meta announced the abolition of its third-party fact-checking policies and also became more lenient on content moderation, searches on how to delete Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have skyrocketed.
Angry users are accusing Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s CEO, of sucking up to the incoming Trump administration while making those social media platforms an even hotterbed of misinformation and polarizing speech at the expense of the social media giant itself. Not that Zuckerberg’s statement about “too politically biased” third-party fact checke would go well with his vision of “free expression” helped the situation.
So if you are like most people and can’t handle the frenzied storm Meta’s algorithms have brought upon you with [insert cultural or political issue here] and are not yet tired of having the company slurp down your data for use in its increasingly trained AI engine or ads, then read on.
When you’ve made up your mind to go all the way – deleting not merely deactivating your Facebook account – then first do this: download your personal information kept by the Facebook archives: all photos, active sessions, chat history, IP addresses, facial recognition data, and ads you clicked on.
Note that this requires a computer and the web browser; stiffy not a mobile phone.
Here’s the guide:
Click the arrow downwards beside your profile picture from the upper right corner of the screen.
Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
Scroll down to the left-hand column until Your information is reached, and click Download your information.
Then, you will have a prompt asking you to go to Accounts Center. Click Continue.
The pop-up will give options: Download or transfer information.
You can choose information from which accounts, including your Facebook, Instagram, and Meta Horizon accounts, to download. Click Next.
Choose how much information you want to download, and
After that click Next. Note from FB: “In case of selecting Specific types of information, you will get information about which types are available for download, including data logs.” For nomads: choose between downloading your information into a device or transferring your info to a destination; then click Next.
Select Transfer to destination to allow you to choose the destination and schedule future transfers. Once you’ve made your selection, click Start transfer and enter your Facebook profile password.
If you select Download to device, choose your file options. A list will appear, allowing you to make a range by date and download in HTML or JSON, and choose between high, medium, or low media quality.
Click Submit request.
Important: Should you delete your account, you will not be able to recover it ever again. Deletion is postponed for a few days after a deletion request has been made, and if a user logs back into Facebook during this time, the deletion request would be canceled.
