Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced a significant initiative to combat inauthentic activity on its platform. In the first half of 2025, the company took action against approximately 500,000 accounts for engaging in spammy behavior or generating fake engagement.

Alongside the 500,000 spam accounts, Meta reported the removal of around 10 million fake profiles that were impersonating prominent content creators.
The enforcement actions included reducing the visibility and monetization options for these accounts, as well as completely removing those that violated the rules.“Creators should be celebrated for their unique voices and perspectives, not overshadowed by copycats and impersonators,” Meta stated.
Addressing Unoriginal and Duplicate Content
Meta is expanding its efforts beyond just spam accounts. The company is implementing stricter measures against accounts that recycle or repurpose content from others without permission or significant enhancement.
- These accounts will lose access to monetization features and will experience reduced visibility on the platform.
- Unoriginal content, which includes repeated reposts of videos, photos, or text created by others, negatively impacts user experience and makes it difficult for new voices to emerge, according to Meta.
- To ensure that original content receives proper visibility, Meta is testing new features that link duplicate videos back to their original posts.
- This will help highlight authentic creators and provide appropriate credit.
What Creators Should Know
To support creators on the platform, Meta has shared best practices for maximizing reach and eligibility for monetization. Key recommendations include:

- Post original content: Pages and profiles that primarily share original posts tend to receive greater distribution.
- Avoid superficial edits: Simply combining clips or adding a watermark does not qualify as meaningful enhancement.
- Tell engaging stories: Content that provides value and authentic storytelling tends to perform better.
- Skip the watermarks: Content that is visibly recycled from other platforms or apps may face penalties.
- Craft thoughtful captions: Keep captions relevant, avoid excessive hashtags, and refrain from including unnecessary links or capital letters.
More Changes Ahead
Meta has indicated that these updates will be gradually implemented over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition for creators.

The company has also introduced post-level insights through the Professional Dashboard, allowing content creators to better understand the visibility of their posts and identify performance issues.
Additionally, creators can now check if they are at risk of penalties related to content recommendations or monetization on the Support home screen, accessible from their Page or professional profile’s main menu.

This crackdown underscores Meta’s ongoing commitment to improving the Facebook experience, reducing digital clutter, and ensuring that authentic content is rewarded, especially as duplicate and AI-generated content increasingly fills social media platforms.
