Meta Opens Up VR Ecosystem: Quest OS Goes Third-Party

Meta has made a significant move in the VR (virtual reality) market, announcing on Monday that its Meta Quest operating system, now called “Meta Horizon OS,” will be open for use by third-party device manufacturers. This shift towards an open platform brings both opportunities and questions for Meta’s position in the VR race.

Big Players Join the Quest

Major tech companies like Asus, Lenovo, and even Microsoft’s Xbox are jumping on board. They’ve confirmed the development of new VR devices that will run Meta Horizon OS. This opens the door for a wider range of VR experiences and potentially more affordable options for consumers.

What Developers Can Access

Meta Horizon OS offers developers access to cutting-edge VR features like eye, face, hand, and body tracking. Additionally, “high-resolution passthrough” allows users to see their surroundings while wearing the headset, enhancing safety and usability. All future headsets running this OS will be able to connect through the existing Meta Quest mobile app, simplifying setup and integration.

Strategic Partnerships

The announcement revealed a unique collaboration between Meta and Microsoft. They’ll be co-developing a “limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox.” This could potentially attract gamers heavily invested in the Xbox ecosystem. Meanwhile, Asus and Lenovo are taking different approaches, with Asus focusing on a dedicated gaming headset and Lenovo targeting productivity, learning, and entertainment applications.

VR Wars: The Battle Heats Up

Meta’s decision to open its platform comes at a critical time. The competition in the VR/AR (augmented reality) market is fierce, with major players like Apple and Sony also vying for dominance. While this move is a strategic step forward for Meta, it remains to be seen if it will give them a definitive edge. The success of the platform will ultimately depend on the quality and variety of third-party headsets developed, along with consumer reception to these new Quest-inspired devices.
