Meta Unveils VR Education Hub (But There’s a Catch)
Meta is gearing up to launch a new platform this year aimed at making virtual reality (VR) education a reality for schools. Announced in a blog post by Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, the hub promises to streamline VR experiences for educators.
Features for Educators, Focus on Learning
Details are still under wraps, but the hub will reportedly offer teachers access to “education-specific apps and features” alongside classroom management tools for Quest headsets. Clegg emphasizes the hub’s potential to enhance learning by allowing students to “learn, apply, and practice new skills” through immersive VR experiences. Imagine walking the ancient streets of Rome or witnessing historical events firsthand!
Accessibility Concerns and Cost Considerations
While VR in education holds promise, the program might not be universally accessible. The hub will be restricted to schools serving students aged 13 and above, and only in regions where Meta’s workplace-oriented “Quest for Business” subscription exists (currently costing $14.99 per device per month). This raises concerns about affordability for schools, especially without potential subsidies from Meta.
Testing the Waters and Looking Ahead
Meta isn’t new to exploring VR education. Last year, they equipped 15 US universities with Quest headsets and experimented with promoting educational apps within the Quest store. It remains to be seen if other institutions will be eager to join the “Quest train” without further incentives from Meta.
