A video explaining the changes was released on the company’s social media handles and delivered by Manuka stratta, an OpenAI post-training researcher.

The latest update by OpenAI aims to settle an old problem for voice AI assistants, whereby they would interrupt users whenever they felt like stopping to think for a while or to draw a deep breath.

Newly free users of ChatGPT are now able to use a new version of Advanced Voice Mode where users can speak without being interrupted by the AI assistant.

Paying ChatGPT users, including subscribers to OpenAI’s Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro tiers, will be interrupted less frequently in regards to their usage of the AI voice functions in Advanced Voice Mode and experience an improved AI voice personality.
According to a spokesperson from OpenAI, the new AI voice assistant for paid users “is more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its answers.”
With these improvements made to Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI has been under pressure from competition in the AI voice assistant sphere.
Recently, Sesame – a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and co-founded by Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe – has gone viral for the natural-sounding AI voice assistants Maya and Miles.

Other players in the AI voice assistant space, like Amazon, are stepping in more aggressively too and are expected to soon launch an LLM version of Alexa.
