Revyze: The TikTok for Education Gets $6M Funding Boost
French startup Revyze is making waves in the educational app space by tapping into a demographic that’s traditionally hard to engage—middle and high school students. The app’s founders aimed to revolutionize learning by adopting a TikTok-inspired model, providing quick, digestible educational content that caters to stressed-out students cramming for exams. Since its launch two years ago, Revyze has attracted a million users and secured a top spot in Apple’s App Store, with one-third of all 9th graders in France using the app for last-minute revisions before their national exam.
The startup has now successfully raised €5.5 million ($6 million) in seed funding, backed by Speedinvest and Moonfire, along with other high-profile investors such as Motier Ventures, Station F, and Supercell co-founder Ilkka Paananen. With a total of 150 million views across 40,000 educational videos and quizzes uploaded by around 2,000 content creators, Revyze’s user growth is showing no signs of slowing down. This influx of capital will be used to enhance the app’s features, expand its audience, and deepen its engagement levels.
Challenges and Expansion Plans
Although Revyze saw immediate success in France, it faced challenges during its U.S. expansion. Co-founder Guillaume Perrot spent four months in the U.S. in 2023 to understand how to adapt the app to a new market. Unlike France, where students heavily used the app before exams, American users showed less year-round engagement, despite the pressure of tests like the SAT.
Revyze realized they needed to go beyond just being an exam cramming app. They refined the app’s experience to make it more engaging throughout the school year, drawing on elements from Duolingo’s approach to daily learning. The app now features “capsules”—collections of short videos, quizzes, and summary sheets focused on a single topic. This allows students to dip in and out of the app, not just during stressful exam periods, but consistently throughout the year.
“We wanted to make learning feel less like a chore,” said co-founder Florent Sciberras. “Capsules let students earn coins by returning daily and completing quizzes, similar to Duolingo’s streak system. These capsules also offer content creators a way to monetize their videos.”
Content Creator Community and Future Monetization
Revyze’s top content creators are key to the app’s success. These creators range from high-performing students eager to share knowledge, to experienced teachers who see this platform as a way to reach a broader audience. “Our community is incredibly diverse,” noted Sciberras. “You might have a 10th grader sharing space with a 45-year-old history teacher from Agen. They’re all focused on one goal: helping students learn more effectively.”
Creators can also earn money by designing content capsules tailored to specific exams, particularly region-specific tests like those in Michigan, ensuring the content is highly relevant to students in that area. Though the app is currently free, the Revyze team plans to monetize by offering additional features, such as personalized analytics, and allowing users to unlock content faster by paying for it.
For now, the focus remains on refining the product and growing its user base. “Our goal is to reach even more students across the world and show them that learning doesn’t have to be overwhelming,” said Perrot.
