Suleyman Takes Helm of New Consumer AI Team
In a major move, Microsoft has secured the talents of Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google’s pioneering AI lab DeepMind. Suleyman announced his new role on a social media platform (X) as CEO of a newly formed team dedicated to Microsoft’s consumer-facing AI products, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge. He will also hold the position of executive vice president of Microsoft AI, granting him a seat on the company’s senior leadership team under CEO Satya Nadella.
A Force in AI, But With a Past
Suleyman co-founded DeepMind in 2010, which later became a Google subsidiary in 2014. While DeepMind remains a leader in Google’s AI research, Suleyman left the division several years ago. According to Bloomberg reports, he was placed on leave in 2019 due to controversy surrounding projects under his leadership. The Wall Street Journal further reported an investigation launched by Google and DeepMind into allegations of staff bullying by Suleyman.
Post-DeepMind Journey and Fresh Start
Following his leave at DeepMind, Google transitioned Suleyman to a role overseeing AI product management and policy. He ultimately left Google in 2022 to co-found Inflection AI, a startup focused on artificial intelligence. Microsoft’s acquisition extends to some of Inflection AI’s talent, including co-founder Karén Simonyan, who will serve as the chief scientist of the new consumer AI group.
Microsoft’s Vision and Commitment
Satya Nadella expressed his admiration for Suleyman in a company memo, highlighting his leadership qualities and history of building successful AI teams. Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to responsible AI development, aiming to “ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the planet.”
Existing Partnerships Remain Strong
The formation of this new internal AI team does not signal a shift away from Microsoft’s existing partnerships in the field. The company assures continued collaboration with OpenAI and its recent acquisition, AI startup Mistral. They plan to “build AI infrastructure” alongside OpenAI.
Microsoft’s Growing AI Presence
Since launching Bing Chat last year, Microsoft has steadily integrated its AI assistant into core products like Office, Windows 11, and Edge. The company is also planning a dedicated AI event before its Build conference in May, hinting at further advancements in AI integration within Windows and Surface devices.
