“Uber’s Dara Khosrowshahi Exits Aurora Self-Driving Board”
Dara Khosrowshahi submitted his resignation from the board of autonomous vehicle technology company Aurora Innovation, according to a Friday regulatory filing. Citing attention to his now full-time responsibilities as CEO of Uber, Khosrowshahi will be reducing his outside board commitments.
Tuesday was Khosrowshahi’s last day as a sitting board member. As per an official announcement on its website, Aurora asserts that Khosrowshahi made a voluntary decision to leave the board without any elements of disagreement with the company.
And Khosrowshahi is indeed CEO of Uber, an innovation that has come a long way with Aurora. In 2020, Uber separated itself from its self-driving unit, Uber ATG, to Aurora.
Under the agreement, Uber would hand over its rights to the ATG and invest $400 million into Aurora, generating a 26% stake in the combined entity. Khosrowshahi joined Aurora’s board under the agreement.
Uber, through its freight brokerage platform that connects shippers and carriers, continued its relationship with Aurora during the announcement that the company opened with Aurora on June 2015. Uber and Aurora confirmed in June to enter into a multi-year agreement that enables trucks powered by Aurora’s technology to be placed on the Uber Freight network.
Neither is Uber’s relationship exclusive to Aurora. The company also has a partnership with Waabi, the startup for self-driving trucks launched by Raquel Urtasun, who previously worked at Uber ATG as chief scientist and head of research and development.
Shailen Bhatt would replace Khosrowshahi on the board of Aurora. Bhatt is currently the senior vice president and chief operating officer at AtkinsRéalis, and she used to work for the Federal Highway Administration.
Khosrowshahi’s exit from the board happens just a few weeks after Aurora’s general counsel, Nolan Shenai, stated that he would resign from the post as of January 6, 2025. Meanwhile, Ossa Fisher, Aurora’s president, will take charge of Shenai’s duties while the company finds a replacement.
