While these rules help ensure that phone numbers don’t run out, they don’t fully address the security gaps. Telecom operators argue that they cannot control third-party apps like Facebook or banking platforms.
To stay safe, users must take a proactive approach to their digital hygiene. If you plan to stop using a number, you should treat it like moving house.
You must update your “address” on every important platform. This includes your BVN records, your email recovery settings, and your social media profiles. Relying on the network provider to protect your data after you have abandoned the line is a dangerous gamble.
Toward a Smarter Identity System
As we move further into 2026, experts are calling for a more integrated solution. One suggestion is to link the SIM recycling process directly to the National Identification Number (NIN) database. This would allow a central system to “unlink” an old number from a person’s financial records automatically.
Until such a system exists, the responsibility remains with the consumer. Double-check your active lines and ensure your “primary” number is always kept active.
