President Tinubu endorses 80% subsidy on dialysis for Nigerians battling kidney problems.
Nigerians can now access kidney dialysis at a significantly reduced cost. This is coming after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of 80% subsidy on dialysis.
The subsidy slashes the cost of kidney dialysis from N50,000 to N12,000.
The initiative is being implemented at select federal medical institutions across the six geopolitical zones, with several Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) and University Teaching Hospitals participating in the scheme including ;
Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta Lagos, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja, the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) Maiduguri.
Others also part of the subsidy scheme are; Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Lagos, Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Benin, and University of Calabar Teaching (UCTH) Calabar.
According to Hammatu Haruna, the manager-in-charge of the renal centre at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, patients are pleased with the subsidy.
She said “Patients are now paying only N12,000, and we’ve seen a remarkable improvement in their condition.”
Haruna noted that prior to the subsidy, many patients struggled to afford the treatment. “Some patients had to sell their belongings or stay home due to the high cost,” she added.
She revealed that since its launch in January, 35 patients have benefited from the subsidy.
She appreciated the efforts of the federal ministry of health in providing adequate resources to ensure the success of the programme.
In her words “We appreciate the federal government of Nigeria; they gave us one dialysis machine; they gave us over 900 dialysers. We have almost everything at hand.”
In recent times, numerous cases of kidney failure have been reported. Following this, the Yobe State Government revealed that it dispatched a team of 50 health experts to investigate the rising cases of kidney disease in the state.
Led by Mahmud Maina, the team comprises specialists from various disciplines, including neurology consultants, laboratory scientists, nephrologists, and international experts from the UK, US, and Ghana.
As part of their investigation, Maina stated the team will conduct interviews with 2,000 residents in Bade and Damaturu local government areas to determine the underlying causes of the disease, whether they were environmental, lifestyle-related, or genetically induced.
