Tinubu faces lawsuit over Buhari, Obasanjo-era loans.

SERAP Sues Tinubu Government Over Loan Transparency

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to disclose the spending details of loans obtained by former presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari. The suit, number FHC/L/CS/353/2024, was filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos.

    Key Points of the Lawsuit:

    1. Defendants: The suit is filed against the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Debt Management Office (DMO).
    2. Demands: SERAP demands the publication of loan agreements and spending details, including interest payments.
    3. Arguments: SERAP argues that transparency and accountability are essential for democratic governance and that Nigerians have a right to know how public funds are spent.
    4. Background: The suit emphasizes that despite significant loans, millions of Nigerians still face extreme poverty and lack basic services. SERAP believes this transparency will shed light on the management of these funds.
    5. Legal Basis: The suit is based on provisions from the Nigerian Constitution, Freedom of Information Act, and international human rights laws.

Implications: SERAP’s action aims to enhance public scrutiny over government borrowing and spending, promoting accountability and reducing corruption risks.

No hearing date has been set for the suit.
