President Bola Tinubu has withdrawn Maryam Sanda’s name from the pardon list after she was given a death sentence in 2020 for the culpable murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.
Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Onanuga, President Tinubu was using his constitutional prerogative of mercy, which is protected by Sections 175(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He emphasised that the Council of State, public opinion, and the signature of all pertinent documents required to formalise the revised list of beneficiaries led to the creation of the new list.

The statement claims that Tinubu ordered the removal off the list of people convicted of serious crimes, such as kidnapping, narcotics offences, human trafficking, fraud, and illicit guns ownership or trafficking including Maryam Sanda.

Additionally, the sentences of those on the prior list who were pardoned have been shortened.
