US President Donald Trump says Denmark would transfer Greenland “the easy way” or “the hard way”.
After moving from colonial status in 1953 to home rule in 1979 and expanding self-government in 2009, Greenland became an autonomous territory inside Denmark.
The territory oversees domestic issues like health and education, while Denmark maintains authority over foreign policy, defence, and monetary policy.

The Danish-administered Arctic island is “critical” for both national and economic security, according to Trump’s repeated declarations of his ambition to buy Greenland.
During his first term in office in 2019, he considered the notion and offered to purchase the island, but was informed that it was not for sale.
On Friday, Trump said the US will acquire Greenland “whether they like it or not” because “if we don’t do it, China or Russia will”.
“Ownership” is necessary, Trump said, because “you don’t defend leases the same way — you have to own it”.

The comments were made just three days after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that using force to seize the territory was “always an option.”
The territory has reaffirmed that it is not for sale. Greenland is not for sale, according to Denmark, a longstanding ally of the United States, which maintains that the island belongs to its people.
Its party leaders, including the opposition, reaffirmed their demand for the “US’s disregard for our country to end” in a unified statement released on Friday night.

“We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders. The future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people,” they said.
Concerns over the future of the territory resurfaced after the US invaded Venezuela last Saturday and captured President Nicolás Maduro in a military operation.

Throughout its history, the US has obtained land from other nations on several occasions, mostly through treaties, cessions, annexations, and acquisitions.
In 1867, Alaska was acquired from Russia for $7.2 million, and in 1803, Louisiana was acquired from France for $15 million.
