The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning British citizens against travelling to several states and parts of the country over security concerns.
The latest guidance was issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, and contains a detailed breakdown of areas where British nationals are advised either to avoid travel completely or travel only when absolutely necessary.
The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East.
The warning also covers Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West.
In the South-South, the UK government advised against all travel to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The FCDO described the affected areas as river and swamp locations that can be accessed by boat but not by road.
Meanwhile, several other states were placed under an “all but essential travel” warning.
These include Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states in the North, as well as Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states in the North-Central region.
The advisory also covers the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including Abuja.
In the South-East, the UK listed Abia, Anambra and Imo states under the same travel restriction. It also advised against all but essential travel to non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.
The FCDO warned that travelling to areas against its advice could have implications for travellers’ insurance coverage.
It stressed that no journey can be guaranteed to be completely safe and urged British citizens planning to visit Nigeria to carefully review its travel guidance before making their trips.
The UK government also encouraged travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance covering their planned activities, itinerary and potential emergency expenses.
According to the FCDO, the latest Nigeria travel advice also provides information on entry requirements, security risks, health concerns and how British nationals can seek assistance while in the country.
