The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has stated that the party is ready to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy, which he said is currently facing serious threats.

Speaking in Bauchi on Friday, Umar Damagum expressed concern over what he called deliberate efforts to weaken the country’s democratic institutions.
He emphasized that the PDP is fully prepared to restore stability and defend the will of the people ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Nigeria’s democracy is facing challenges ranging from poor governance to insecurity and economic hardship. The country urgently requires political intervention,” he said.
He noted that as the leading opposition party with national presence, the PDP remains committed to rebuilding trust in democratic structures and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
Umar Damagum also disclosed that preparations for the party’s National Convention are progressing smoothly and without internal conflicts, adding that the event will be a defining moment for both the PDP and the nation’s political direction.

He called on Nigerians to rally behind the party to reclaim the country from what he termed misgovernance, adding the PDP’s commitment to accountability, economic rejuvenation and improved welfare for citizens.
“Democracy thrives only when citizens stand up to defend it. The PDP will continue to reach out across all levels to ensure that our democratic system is not only protected but strengthened,” he added.
