Ghana’s ex-finance minister, who was officially accused of corruption in November after being labelled a fugitive in February of last year, has requested to prolong his stay in the United States, his attorneys announced late on Wednesday.

Ken Ofori-Atta was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday due to “the status of his current stay in the United States,” they stated.

“His US legal team is in contact with ICE and expects the matter to be resolved expeditiously,” the statement added, stressing that Ofori-Atta was cooperating fully with immigration authorities.

Ofori-Atta was detained at a facility in the US state of Virginia, according to ICE’s online database.

Under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta supervised controversial tax revisions and talks with the International Monetary Fund while serving as finance minister from 2017 to 2024.

Ken Ofori’s detention comes just days following a dramatic capture of Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro by US troops.
