The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has clarified that it will continue processing diplomatic and official US visas, despite recent operational adjustments to standard visa services across the country.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria issued the statement via X (formerly Twitter) to address concerns regarding a U.S. Department of State plan to centralize regular visa processing from Abuja and select African locations into designated regional hubs.
According to the U.S. government, these structural changes aim to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen security vetting procedures, and align diplomatic operations more closely with U.S. national security priorities.
The new arrangement affects several African cities, including Antananarivo, Asmara, Bamako, Banjul, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Conakry, Cotonou, Durban, Freetown, Gaborone, Harare, Juba, Libreville, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru, Mbabane, N’Djamena, Niamey, Nouakchott, Ouagadougou and Windhoek. The changes took effect on August 1, 2026.
The US Department of State stressed that the changes do not mean the affected diplomatic missions have closed.
The US Mission Nigeria also recently clarified that the Abuja embassy will continue processing official and diplomatic visas in the A, G and C categories.
It suggested that applicants should first speak with their protocol office, which often deals with issues, if they think they might be eligible for any of the diplomatic or official visa categories.
According to the statement, the US Embassy in Abuja will still offer visa services to qualified diplomatic and official applicants even though normal visa processing has been shifted to regional centers.
Backstory…
The development comes weeks after the United States Department of State began restructuring visa processing across Africa, with routine visa services at the US Embassy in Abuja transferred to designated regional hubs from August 1, 2026.
