Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has opened up about how poor electricity supply in Nigeria affected her childhood and personal growth.
Speaking at the Global Citizen NOW event in New York, the singer said growing up without stable electricity shaped many aspects of her life and limited opportunities during her early years.
According to her, unreliable power supply affected her education, career development, and even her family’s source of income.
Recalling her childhood experience, Ayra Starr explained that her grandmother sold tomatoes and pepper, and they often had to sell the items quickly because there was no electricity to preserve them.

Ayra Starr said the difficult experience forced her to become resilient and creative, as she had to learn how to survive and achieve things without the comfort of steady power supply.
The singer added that having access to electricity while growing up would have made life much easier, especially while studying after school in the heat without basic conveniences like a fan or air conditioner.
Ayra Starr also called on African leaders to prioritize solving the continent’s electricity problems, stressing that every child deserves access to electricity and other essential social amenities needed for proper growth and development.
