The FCCPC alerts consumers of inferior sugar brands.

Nigerians were alerted Tuesday by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to the existence and distribution of inferior and unregistered sugar products.

The items include smuggled Brazilian names including Grupo Moreno, Terous, USI S. Joao, Alvean, and Arapora Bionergia, according to a statement released by FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu.
He also stated that consumers are at considerable danger for health problems due to the products’ failure to meet regulatory requirements for vitamin A fortification.According to Ijagwu, the inferior goods damage the reputation of the regional sugar sector and aid in market-damaging pricing manipulation.

According to the statement, “FCCPC operatives carried out covert investigations throughout the nation, especially in the South-West and the North-East, after receiving a tip.”

Many of the discovered sugar products did not have the required National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) registration, production and expiration dates, batch numbers, or other standard labeling, according to the investigations. Even worse, the majority of the goods lacked vitamin A fortification, which is a vital ingredient for healthy eyesight, a strong immune system, and general wellbeing.

“The lack of this fortification puts Nigerian consumers at significant risk for health problems, such as blindness and heightened vulnerability to infections, especially for vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children.”The economic impact of these items is another major concern for the FCCPC.
