Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has just been re-appointed as the Director General of the World Trade Organization for the second time. The appointment will take effect from September 1, 2025.
The WTO announced this in the early hours of Friday through Elon Musk’s popular social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). The decision was reached after the WTO general council meeting held on Friday.
The statement from WTO reads,
“Her second four-year term, which was approved at a special General Council meeting, will begin on 1 September 2025. DG Okonjo-Iweala took office as Director-General in March 2021 and is the first African and the first woman to serve as head of the organization.”
On September 16, 2024, Ngozi announced her intentions to remain as the DG of the WTO for a four-year tenure. And 58 member countries were in agreement with the proposal sent by the African group of the WTO to keep Ngozi as the head of the organization for another tenure.
Ngozi has since tried to pull fresh ideas into the organization, such as climate change and health improvement. However, she went unopposed in the nominations for the next DG of the World Trade Organization.
