“A 37-year-old Nigerian lawyer, employed as a caregiver in the UK, collapses while on duty and tragically passes away.”
Neighbors made frantic efforts to save the life of Chidimma Susan Ezenyili, a 37-year-old Nigerian caregiver who collapsed on the streets of Bishop’s Stortford and tragically passed away two days later.
Known affectionately as Suzy, she had been battling illness but was determined to fulfill her caregiving duties for her elderly client, Ian Hale, despite her condition. Suzy and her husband, Friday, had migrated from Nigeria to the UK in search of a better life for their three-year-old daughter, Mandy, both working as caregivers on sponsorship visas.
When Suzy collapsed on February 22nd, her husband immediately called for assistance. The community rallied together, including Ian’s daughter Catherine and her husband, alongside nearby neighbors, to offer aid in this dire situation.
While Catherine contacted emergency services and followed their instructions, neighbor Tracey Clarke took little Mandy into her home to shield her from the unfolding tragedy before returning to offer her assistance.
Armando Villa, another resident, swiftly ran to the Havers Community Centre to retrieve a portable defibrillator. Meanwhile, Catherine’s husband, Saul, initiated chest compressions in a desperate attempt to revive Suzy.
Catherine recounted, “We were fortunate to have two GoodSAM first responders arrive shortly after to lend their assistance. Alongside several ambulances, police, and the critical care team, they took over the efforts to save her life. Ultimately, they succeeded in stabilizing her condition and placing her on life support in the ambulance.”
Suzy was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
Catherine initiated a JustGiving appeal to aid Friday and Mandy. She expressed, “They’re navigating this situation alone and will face challenges without access to public assistance. Friday is in the process of obtaining a sponsorship visa, but their family lacks the resources to cope during this difficult period.
“As a single parent now, Friday will encounter difficulties balancing work and caring for Mandy without assistance.
“Friday has consistently conveyed his appreciation to the community and first responders who offered assistance during that tragic incident. He has authorized us to establish the JustGiving page.”
