Breaking News: Court Stops Trump’s Birthright Ban Order

A federal district court in the United States has issued a temporary injunction against President Donald Trump’s directive aimed at abolishing birthright citizenship.

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour delivered this ruling. The plan to eliminate birthright citizenship was scheduled to go into effect on February 19, but 18 state attorneys general initiated legal challenges on Tuesday.

During a brief session in Seattle, Brett Shumate, a lawyer representing the Justice Department, began to argue in favor of Trump’s directive, but he was abruptly interrupted.

“Is this order constitutional?” Coughenour interjected. “This is an order that is blatantly unconstitutional.

“We reflect on history and wonder ‘where were the judges, where were the lawyers?’”

“Honestly, I struggle to find a member of the bar who could confidently assert that this is a constitutional order.”

Coughenour remarked that the directive is “mind-boggling,” expressing that he could not recall encountering another case where the challenged action was so evidently unconstitutional during his more than forty years of legal practice.

Trump enacted the directive on Monday, coinciding with his inauguration, in an effort to reverse a long-standing law.

This rapid action was at the forefront of his campaign agenda focusing on immigration enforcement.

Additionally, on Wednesday, the president authorized the deployment of 1,500 U.S. troops to “secure” the borders against illegal immigration.
