In the aftermath of the soldiers’ killings: Bloodshed in Delta, villagers flee, seek refuge in forests.
Residents of Okuama community in Delta State fled into the bush after soldiers allegedly opened fire on them, killing about 50 people. The soldiers had arrived for peace talks but tensions rose when they insisted on taking community leaders for questioning.
The soldiers then reportedly opened fire during a meeting, causing casualties. The community was later attacked again, with houses set ablaze. Residents, hiding in the bush, called for government intervention. They denied involvement in the killing of soldiers and urged for a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, Okoloba community accused Okuama leaders of hiring a militant leader for the attack, while Okuama blamed an Ijaw leader for instigating the soldiers’ actions.
They appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser to intervene and ensure neutral military operations in the area.
