Following the sacking of Mele Kyari by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the appointment of Bashir Bayo Ojulari to replace him as Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL), here are 5 things you need to know about the new man in charge:

One, Ojulari is a mechanical engineering graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1985 – 1989). He also hails from Kwara State.

Before his appointment to become NNPCL’s GCEO, Bayo Ojulari was the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. Renaissance was part of the leading consortium that acquired the whole equity holding of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), worth $2.4 billion.

Ojulari’s professional career started with Elf Aquitaine, where he was employed as a process engineer. He was the first Nigerian to occupy this position in the oil company.

He then moved on to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in 1991 to work as an associate production technologist.

Bayo worked for SPDC in different locations, where he was involved in different roles within the oil company. He worked as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer, and asset manager.

He became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) in 2015, while also serving on the board of directors of SPDC. His tenure lasted for 6 years.

The new NNPCL GCEO also served as the chairman and a member of the board of trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigeria Council) between 1998 and 1999. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).

Bayo Ojulari goes on to replace Mele Kyari as NNPCL’s CEO, while he will work side by side with NNPC’s new board chairman, Ahmadu Musa Kida, who replaced Pius Akinyelure.
