The family of Miss Inioubong Umoren, a University of Uyo graduate who was tragically murdered, has denied allegations that her organs were harvested after her death in April 2021.

Inioubong Umoren, a 26-year-old Philosophy graduate, was killed on April 29, 2021, by Uduak Abasi Frank Akpan, who lured her under the pretense of a job interview. Akpan was later convicted of rape and murder and received a death sentence from the Akwa Ibom State High Court on August 4, 2022.

In response to a viral video featuring Dr. Sandra Duru, also known as Prof Mgbeke, who claimed that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan told her that Senator Godswill Akpabio was involved in the murder and organ harvesting of Miss Umoren, the family called these allegations outrageous and deeply hurtful. They clarified that all of her internal organs were confirmed to be intact.

In an interview with Punch, Ifiok Ephraim Umoren, the eldest sister of the deceased, expressed her disbelief: “How can someone claim that my sister’s organs were harvested when I was present during the autopsy?” she asked.

“This accusation is not only false but also dishonors my sister’s memory and re-traumatizes our family.” She added that the police took Iniubong’s body for an autopsy at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where she was present, and confirmed that no organs were missing.

Supporting her statement, Mr. Friday Johnson Itim, the Akwa Ibom Director of Public Prosecution, described the crime as a solitary act committed by Uduak Abasi, who attacked Iniubong after she refused to engage in unprotected sex.

“He killed her in anger, buried her in a shallow grave, and fled. His arrest was facilitated by his family and the local government chairman,” Itim stated.

Mr. Abdullah further emphasized that the organ harvesting allegations had no basis in the court proceedings. “Neither the prosecution nor the defense ever mentioned Senator Akpabio in connection with this case.

The certified autopsy report is publicly available and confirms that all internal organs were intact.”
