Why surrogacy is not the enemy, should be embraced
Just recently, the fuss about surrogacy has been through the roof with celebrities and public figures bantering words over the subject while revealing new insights.

Surrogacy which has to do with outsourcing the entire process of child bearing, from carrying the child to the actual birth of the child to another woman. The process typically involves  fertilizing the biological mother’s eggs with the biological father’s produce and inseminating the seed into the surrogate mother.

Surrogacy sometimes placed on the same pedestal as IVF was originally viewed as a last resort for females who have had fertility issues, inability to conceive or general health challenges.

In Nigeria, there are no laws explicitly prohibiting surrogacy however there have not been clearly defined legal frameworks concerning it.

However following the surge in same sex marriages and the decision of some Nigerian women to preserve their physical physique over child bearing, there has been a lot of buzz about the subject with several others expressing contrary opinions.

Just recently, a UK based Nigerian influencer Ifedayo Agoro,  popularly known on the social media space as Diaryofanaijagirl declared that she would resort to surrogacy for child birth although she was very healthy and had no complications. She stressed that women should be allowed to do with their bodies as they dim fit, adding that one didn’t need to bleed to experience the joys of motherhood.

Following this was a heavy backlash and criticism from another UK based male influencer Solomon Buchi who berated women for always seeking easier ways out.

In his words, “Modern day womanhood is funny — outsource chores to maids; outsource pregnancy to surrogate; outsource childbirth to surrogate; outsource parenting to nursery because of career. This world is so fallen”.

    Why surrogacy should be embraced

While the need to want to remain a certain body size or maintain a particular physique may not be reason enough to deny oneself of the gratification of carrying and bearing one’s child by self, the uncertain process of child birth itself and the challenges it comes along with cannot go unacknowledged.

Countless women have lost their lives from this painful yet beautiful process of birthing a  child however, surrogacy is not the enemy here.

For some women options like IVF and surrogacy may the only chance they ever get at being called mothers while for some it’s only a show of how far they’re willing to go to keep their physical appearance.

In any case, it still remains that both groups get the gratification they desire however the question remains, at what point should surrogacy be embraced?
