The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has raised the alarm over the unrestrained abuse of drugs in Calabar and other big towns in Cross River State.
In an interview, the Deputy Commander, Operations, of the NDLEA in the Cross River State Command, Victor Bradford, disclosed that there is an unprecedented number of detainees who abuse substances in their Calabar facilities than elsewhere.
He lamented that there are so many people doing drugs in the state, saying this has become very disturbing.
He stated that the fight against drug abuse, organized crime, and illegal drug trade requires a pressing need for a united front to combat the menace.
To stem the tide of the alarming abuse, Bradford revealed that they have activated some operations that are ongoing to clamp down on drug barons and the distribution of drugs.
He assured that those behind the escalated distribution of drugs in the state would not be spared.
Other concerned stakeholders have also emphasized the need for a drug-free society.
Addressing questions on drug abuse over Sparkling FM radio in Calabar, former President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr. Caleb Ekuri, described organized crime as a key factor fueling substance abuse and illicit trafficking.
The medical expert spoke on the theme Break the Cycle to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Dr. Ekuri stressed that these acts have devastating effects on every strata of society.
He called for increased awareness, and collective and strategic efforts in addressing the drug menace.
