While the global box office performance is under scrutiny, the film’s local success highlights Nigeria’s increasing enthusiasm for high-budget blockbusters and underscores the lasting popularity of the Jurassic franchise.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, known for *Rogue One* and *Godzilla*, *Rebirth* is the seventh film in the Jurassic Park series and serves as a direct sequel to 2022’s *Jurassic World: Dominion*, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

With a budget of approximately $180 million, the film brings back screenwriter David Koepp, a long-time collaborator with Steven Spielberg who co-wrote the original *Jurassic Park* (1993) and *The Lost World* (1997).

About the Movie

Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and Rupert Friend, the film introduces a new narrative and tone for the series. Set nearly twenty years after a failed InGen experiment on a remote Atlantic island, the story follows a secret mission to retrieve dinosaur DNA that could lead to a groundbreaking treatment for heart disease. However, true to the Jurassic spirit, the mission descends into chaos as genetically modified predators unleash havoc.

The plot spans continents and time periods. In the present day of 2027, the Earth’s climate has become inhospitable for de-extinct creatures. Dinosaurs are now confined to equatorial regions reminiscent of the Mesozoic era, making them off-limits to humans. A desperate pharmaceutical company, ParkerGenix, initiates a covert operation to collect DNA from three key species: a Mosasaurus, a Titanosaurus, and a Quetzalcoatlus.

What ensues is a gripping survival story involving mercenaries, scientists, and a family caught in the midst of carnivorous chaos. The film’s villain, a genetically altered six-limbed Tyrannosaurus known as Distortus rex, adds a new level of terror to the franchise’s expanding roster of creatures.

What to Know

Filming took place in Thailand, Malta, and the U.K., with principal photography concluding in September 2024. This ambitious international production reflects Universal Pictures’ ongoing commitment to revitalizing its flagship franchise, despite receiving mixed reviews.

Critics have praised the visual effects and the performances of the ensemble cast, but some have noted a complicated plot and signs of franchise fatigue.

Nevertheless, *Rebirth* has surpassed initial expectations in various markets, and its debut in Nigeria marks a significant achievement in a region that is becoming an important center for global cinema. While Nollywood has traditionally dominated local screens, the success of foreign blockbusters like *Fast X*, *Avatar: The Way of Water*, and now *Jurassic World: Rebirth* indicates a strong demand for Hollywood films in West Africa.

With a history of box office success, *Jurassic World: Rebirth* is set for a solid international performance, even as it faces competition from summer releases and streaming options. Its debut in Nigeria may be modest compared to global figures, but it reaffirms one key point: dinosaurs continue to captivate audiences, not just in Hollywood.
