Attorney-General of the Federation, or AGF, Lateef Fagbemi has been called to step down by Nigerian frontline lawyer Chief Mike Ozekhome if President Bola Tinubu disregards his legal advice.
This was stated by the senior attorney, who also pointed out that the federal government’s decision to reject funding intended for Osun State local governments is purely political.

According to him, the AGF recently recommended in a letter to the minister of finance that the LGA allocations be made available to the state’s fired All Progressives Congress (APC) officials, raising concerns that President Tinubu may not be receiving adequate legal advice from Fagbemi.
Ozekhome stressed that this was not good for democracy.
He reminded Tinubu that while he was governor of Lagos State, he encountered a similar issue with the then Olusegun Obasanjo, who withheld Lagos state allocations.

“The Supreme Court held that the Federal Government could never withhold funds meant for local governments in Lagos State,” he reminded the President.
“If he did give the advice and the President ignored it, then he ought to resign,” Ozekhome added, expressing his doubt that the President would reject appropriate advice and legal guidance from Fagbemi.

He further pointed that “the President abided by that advice” when former President Goodluck Jonathan was counselled by then-AGF Mohammed Bello Adoke not to remove the Plateau State Governor from office until a state of emergency could be established in the region.
