Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has explained why she set fire to the outfit she wore to the burial ceremony of late actor Alex Ekubo.
She shared the update on her official Instagram page, stating that she followed a belief that clothing worn to funerals should not be kept.
According to her, she was advised by her godmother that garments worn to burial ceremonies are traditionally meant to be disposed of, including by burning.
She wrote that after the event, she decided to act on the advice and encouraged others to take note of the practice, adding that she felt it was important to share the information.
Angela Okorie also prayed for long life and blessings, expressing gratitude and hope for continued good health.
BACKSTORY…
In Nigerian culture, burials are often treated with deep spiritual and emotional significance, and many people attach traditional beliefs to items worn or used during such events. Over time, some communities have developed customs around “cleansing” after funerals, with certain individuals believing that clothes worn to burial ceremonies should not be reused or kept, as they may carry emotional or spiritual weight.
Within the entertainment industry, however, such practices are often influenced more by personal beliefs, advisors, or family traditions rather than a shared rule. It is not uncommon for celebrities to act on spiritual counsel from close confidants or religious figures when making decisions that touch on sensitive cultural matters.
Against this backdrop, public reactions to such actions tend to be divided — with some seeing it as a harmless personal conviction, while others view it as unnecessary or rooted in superstition. This is why discussions around burial-related practices among public figures often gain attention quickly on social media.
Alex Ekubo was laid to rest in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State, on June 18, 2026, after a week of emotional funeral rites attended by family members, colleagues, and fans. The ceremony drew widespread attention across the entertainment industry as colleagues came together to honor the late actor’s life and legacy.
Following the burial, Angela Okorie took to her Instagram page to share a video of the outfit she wore to the ceremony. In the post, she explained that she later burned the outfit, saying she had been advised by her godmother that clothes worn to burial events should not be kept but disposed of by burning.
Her statement quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with some people supporting her belief while others questioned the decision and her decision to publicly share it.
The actress, however, maintained that she was simply sharing what she had been told and encouraged others to take note of the practice, adding a prayer for long life and protection.
