Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, has warned that future presidents may find it challenging to succeed if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to fulfil his historic duty to change Nigeria’s future.
In a TV interview, Sani described Tinubu’s presidency as a turning point in Nigeria’s political history. He stated that the president has “a unique opportunity to reshape and reconfigure the destiny of this country” and that the political foundation of the country will either be strengthened or weakened by his actions.

“If President Bola Tinubu fails, I don’t think it will be easy for any other president to succeed,” he cautioned.
Recalling the governance approach Tinubu used as governor of Lagos State, the former legislator encouraged the president to choose competency over political allegiance in his appointments. Sani stated, “The standard he set in Lagos, where he brought the best people to lead, must now be applied nationwide.”

He bemoaned Nigeria’s polarising political environment, pointing out that the opposition and the governing class frequently saw one another as enemies rather than collaborators.
“Our politics is so toxic that those in government see the opposition as enemies, while those outside power see the government as an enemy,” he observed.

Sani emphasised that growth necessitates sacrifice and vision and urged the president to make audacious, reform-driven decisions, even if they are unpopular. “No nation fell from the sky. He continued, “China, Singapore, Indonesia, they all paid the price for progress.”
The former senator underlined that whether Nigeria recovers or stays mired in cycles of political and economic stagnation will depend on how Tinubu handles this crucial time.
