At least 44 shops and stores at the well-known Singa Market in Kano State have been destroyed by an early morning fire.
The Kano State Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, confirmed the event in a statement on Monday night. It happened at approximately five in the morning.
The statement claims that Mubarak Muhammad called the agency in an emergency and informed the central control room about the fire outbreak.
“On arrival, our men found a one-storey building measuring about 150 by 150 feet, known as Alhaji Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, completely engulfed in flames,” the statement said.
According to Abdullahi, 19 stores on the upper floor and 25 temporary shops attached to the building’s front were totally demolished.
However, firefighters were able to control the fire and stop it from spreading to all of the ground floor stores as well as 24 additional establishments on the upper floor.
He continued by saying that limited road access brought on by trucks parked along the roadway made the rescue effort difficult and created delays in getting to the spot.
The response crew was directed by Alhaji Sani Anas, the director of fire services.
During their investigation, they met with the head of the building, Ambassador Garba Ibrahim Mai Maggie, and a security personnel, Malam Ibrahim, who disclosed that the entire building used a single electric switch.
“Based on our findings, we discovered that the switch was not properly managed, and we strongly suspect that a fault from the electrical wiring caused the fire, which started from the temporary shops,” the statement added.
This incident comes barely two weeks after a previous fire broke out at shiwaki market in Kano state.
