Mohammed Badaru, the minister of defence, stated on Wednesday that the ministry is looking into the altercation between Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and A. M. Yerima, a navy officer, over a contested plot of land in Abuja.

Speaking at a news conference held at the National Defence College in Abuja to kick off events for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Badaru stated that the Armed Forces will not desert any personnel performing their legal duty.

He said, “Well, at the ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty.

“We are looking into this issue, and we assure all that any officer on lawful duty will be highly protected. We will not allow anything to happen to him so long as he is doing his job, and he is doing his job very well.”

Recall that NaijaEyes reported that Nyesom Wike visited the location on Tuesday and claimed that the military had illegally taken over the area, which led to the conflict.

The clearly furious minister questioned the presence of armed people on the property in a video that our correspondent was able to obtain. These individuals are allegedly Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd), a former Chief of Naval Staff.

Beyond the tragedy, Badaru used the briefing to announce new plans to improve national security, veteran welfare, and military operations.

He urged Nigerians to show gratitude to troops and fallen heroes.
