Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have taken over the Azbir Hotel and Azbir Arena belonging to the former Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, in Kebbi State following an ongoing fraud investigation by the anti graft agency.

After the officers seized control of the property, it was observed that police patrol vans were parked near the Azbir Hotel and Azbir Arena, with officers keeping a watchful eye.

Recall that the anti-graft agency on November 28, invited Malami for questioning.

Imran Muhammad, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporter of the late former president Muhammadu Buhari, posted a video clip on X on Sunday that appeared to show an ongoing police operation with five police patrol vans and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) parked in front of the properties.

In a number of petitions filed with the EFCC, Malami was accused of money laundering, abusing his position of authority, and amassing assets that were allegedly considerably above his legal income, in addition to his claimed involvement in a $16.9 million legal fees scheme connected to the recovery of the Sani Abacha loot.

The EFCC clarified in court documents that the petitions claimed Malami approved the payment of $16.9 million in legal expenses related to the recovery of money attributed to Abacha.

The EFCC further claimed that the ex SGF gave his colleague, the second respondent, an unfair advantage in transactions that are currently being looked into by using his position as Attorney-General.

Beyond the alleged $16.9 million payment, the petitions also raised questions about what they described as Malami’s “unexplained wealth” and ownership of high-value assets allegedly disproportionate to his known earnings before and during his time in public office.
