Davido on His Perpetual Thankfulness to Tekno
A video circulating on social media captures a heartfelt revelation by superstar Afrobeats singer Davido, where he expresses his enduring gratitude to his fellow artist, Tekno. The “Unavailable” hitmaker made this emotional disclosure during an interview on the show “Bounce,” hosted by media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
In the interview, Ebuka asked Davido directly, “Are you grateful to Tekno for ‘If’?” This question referenced the massive hit song “If,” released by Davido in 2017, which played a significant role in revitalizing his career at the time. The track, penned by Tekno, quickly became a global Afrobeats sensation, amassing over 180 million views on YouTube.
Davido’s response was immediate and sincere. He acknowledged Tekno’s crucial role in his career resurgence, saying, “What? Till date, ask Tekno. Tekno brought me back when I did not have a hit for almost a year, bro.” This statement underscored the pivotal moment “If” represented in Davido’s musical journey.
Recalling the events that led to the creation of “If,” Davido shared that Tekno had been persistent about having a song for him. However, Davido’s fondness for nightlife and socializing often caused delays. He recounted, “Tekno kept telling me, ‘David, I got one song,’ but you know me, I like Jaiye (enjoyment). I said, ‘I dey club oh.'”
One night, while Davido was at Quillox, a popular nightclub, Tekno took a decisive step. Davido narrated, “One day, Tekno came to the club to drag me. He came to Quillox to actually drag me.” This act of determination by Tekno led to a breakthrough.
Ebuka interjected, noting Tekno’s evident commitment, “So he really wanted you to do it.” Davido agreed, expressing astonishment at Tekno’s dedication. “I’ve never seen somebody that wants me to do a song like that. Tekno wrote the whole song. The song was recorded. ‘If’ is recorded. There is a Tekno version of it.”
When asked why Tekno was so invested in having Davido perform the song, Davido humbly replied, “I’m a good guy,” implying the mutual respect and belief Tekno had in his talent.
Davido further elaborated on the recording session, highlighting its spontaneity and the state he was in. “Tekno called me, dragged me to his house. I recorded it, drunk as sh!t, and he called me the next day saying, ‘Omo, this thing na hit oh.'”
This candid recounting of the events not only illustrates the strong bond between Davido and Tekno but also emphasizes the significant impact Tekno’s belief and intervention had on Davido’s career. The success of “If” stands as a testament to their collaboration and the magic that can happen when artists support each other
